volunteer opportunities

Hello SCS Supporters!

The school year is off to a great start!  The students are reunited withtheir friends and the teachers are ready for a full year of teaching and growing kids in Christ.

Over the summer, the Education Committee and the Board established a vision statement for the school.  As the society, we are excited to share this vision of the future of SCS with you:

The vision of Sully Christian School is to educate, equip, and engage children in the life-long mission of bringing glory to God. Students will be challenged to achieve excellence as they use their gifts and abilities to declare the Lordship of Christ in every aspect of their life and strive to be more Christ-like in their relationships.

We are truly excited about the future of SCS.  Classrooms are thriving and students are already growing in many ways.  To God be all the glory for the work that is being done!

Raising disciples of Christ is a family commitment, and family extends far beyond flesh and blood to our spiritual families.  Is God calling YOU to come and serve at SCS and join our ministry of raising disciples for Christ?  Can you be a blessing at SCS with your God-given gifts?  We have many volunteer opportunities where one can work with the students and staff at SCS.  We would love to have you join our family and serve alongside of us.  Below you will find descriptions of volunteer opportunities and sign up links.  Help spread the word, and thank you for joining our ministry!

 Classroom Helper

Do you love working with children?  Our K-4 classrooms are offering the opportunity to spend an hour or two in the classroom helping the teacher.  You might read books to students, help with worksheets, or simply spend time talking to them.  Please click the link to sign up for this, and a teacher will contact you soon.

 Lunchtime Helper

Our teachers will have the opportunity to meet every other week during the lunch hour to collaborate with one another and fellowship.  This volunteer opportunity allows you to connect with the kids during their lunch hour.  You will help the younger kids with their food, open milk cartons, and monitor the lunchroom until all the kids have left for recess.  Please click the link below to sign up for this and Angela will contact you soon.

 Kitchen Helper

Sheila Pleima, our bus driver and librarian, is also our head cook this year!  She is still working another job on Thursdays and we need someone to serve lunch on those days.  Have a heart for serving?  We’d love to have you help out!  Sheila does all the planning, grocery shopping and will have some of the prep work done on those days. Volunteers will just need to prepare the food, serve the food, and clean up that day.  It’s a lot of fun to see the kids as they go through the lunch line!  If you would like to volunteer in the kitchen, click the link below and Sheila will contact you soon.

Now in our 105th year of Christian education, we are so grateful for the opportunity to impact generations of students, an impact that lasts a lifetime!

It is a blessing to know that you are interested in Christian education and Sully Christian School. SCS offers unique opportunities for students to discover their passion and ample opportunities to develop that passion. As you explore our web site, we trust that you discover a vibrant academic community dedicated to inspiring and nurturing excellence in all facets of our students' lives. With our mission to provide Christ-centered academic excellence with the Word of God as our foundation, we seek to partner with Christian families in the training of their children. SCS teachers make a difference in the life of each child, working hard to provide a school environment that fosters learning and growing in God's world.

We invite you to take some time to come and visit our school to see first-hand what makes Sully Christian School so special.
We hope to see you soon!

Going beyond state standards, Sully Christian School teachers set high expectations for all students. In classrooms, students do more than listen. They respond, challenge, and share their opinions, and quickly understand that learning is not an isolated classroom event. Our small class sizes allow for individual attention. As members of Christian Schools International (CSI), we are expected to strive for, attain, and maintain high academic standards. SCS was ranked #1 in Iowa for grades 3 to 5 in a five-year longevity report in 2011 that identified the proficiency levels of all students. See report here.

     why Christian

"The vision of Christian education is radical because it stems from the conviction that any and every education is rooted (Latin: radix) in some worldview, some constellation of ultimate beliefs. Therefore, it’s important that the education and formation of Christians be rooted in Christ (Col. 2:7)—rooted in and nourished by a Christian worldview across the curriculum.

The commitment to Christian schooling grows out of a sense that to confess “Jesus is Lord” has a radical impact on how we see every aspect of God’s good creation. The curriculum of Christian schools should enable children to learn about everything—from algebra to zygotes—through the lens of Christian faith." - James Smith
